A Brooklyn man was arrested for drunk driving after he allegedly drove off the Thruway and crashed into a wooded area in New Paltz.
Tsering Wangyal, age 43 of Brooklyn, was arrested by the New York State Police at approximately 8:30pm on Sunday. Police said he was operating a 2015 Toyota Rav4 when he drove approximately 20 feet off the roadway and into a wooded area. He escaped injuries.
State Police said they found Wangyal to be intoxicated. He was taken into custody, transported, and processed at the State Police barracks in Newburgh. Troopers determined his blood alcohol content was 0.26%, which is more than three times the legal limit of 0.08%.
Wangyal was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, a misdemeanor. He was turned over to a sober third party and released on an appearance ticket. He is scheduled to return to the New Paltz Court on June 29, 2022 at 6:00pm.
In New York State, more than 30% of fatal crashes are alcohol-related.
