Alexandra “Sandi” Groome Scopteuolo

September 2, 1943 – March 18, 2022 (age 78)

Washingtonville, NY

Alexandra “Sandi” Groome Scopteuolo was born on September 2, 1943 to Samuel Groome and Dorothy Wells Groome in Stamford, Connecticut and passed away on March 18, 2022 in Lake Wylie, South Carolina. She grew up in Montgomery, New York and attended school there, but loved to spend summers with her Nana in Northfield, Vermont. She was a proud graduate of the Northfield School for Girls Class of 1961 in Massachusetts.  She went on to attend Keuka College. She married Matthew Scopteuolo in 1963 after a six week whirlwind courtship that became a 58 year marriage. They had two daughters, Amanda and Robyn. They raised their family in Washingtonville, New York. She loved her family beyond measure, especially her “grands.” She loved to travel and would always strike up conversations with strangers, often finding “small world” coincidences along the way. She loved to crochet and knit and enjoyed making blankets and scarves for her many friends. She attended Union Church in Newburgh, New York where she had served as an elder for many years. She volunteered for Northfield Mount Hermon School (formerly Northfield School for Girls) extensively over the years. She loved her years there and her life-long friends that she made there.

She was predeceased by her parents and her beloved grandmother, Laura Wells. She is survived by her spouse of 58 years, Matthew Scopteuolo, as well as her daughters, Amanda Scopteuolo and her husband Vincent Bienish, and Robyn Scopteuolo and her husband Alexander Rosen. She leaves behind her grandchildren, Matthew Coyle, Madisyn Scopteuolo, Michael Coyle, Noah Scopteuolo-Rosen, and Leah Scopteuolo-Rosen.  She leaves her brother, Samuel Groome, many nieces and nephews, and many dear friends that she loved as family.

In lieu of flowers, please smile upon a stranger or do a kind deed. Sandi would famously say that “this too shall pass” and we will all wait for that day. Donations can be made to Prisma Health Cancer Services Dragon Boat in Greenville, South Carolina and Dwell Orphan Care in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A service will be held on Thursday, (details to be announced), with entombment following in Cedar Hill Mausoleum, Newburgh.
